Job Description
A Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to help patients recover from injuries, surgeries, illnesses, or disabilities that affect movement and mobility. PTAs assist with implementing treatment plans, guiding therapeutic exercises, monitoring patient progress, and educating patients on rehabilitation techniques.
PTAs work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, and travel healthcare assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Physical Therapists in carrying out individualized treatment plans
- Guide patients through therapeutic exercises, stretching, balance training, and mobility activities
- Monitor and document patient progress and responses to treatment
- Use rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities appropriately
- Educate patients and families on home exercise programs and injury prevention
- Help patients improve strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance, and mobility
- Maintain accurate patient records and treatment documentation
- Observe patients for changes in condition and report findings to supervising therapist
- Ensure a safe and clean treatment environment
- Comply with healthcare regulations, safety standards, and facility policies
Requirements & Qualifications
Education- Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program
- Active PTA license in the state of practice
- Graduation from a CAPTE-accredited program
- Current BLS/CPR certification (commonly required)
- Previous clinical or rehabilitation experience preferred
- Experience in outpatient, inpatient, orthopedic, geriatric, or skilled nursing settings may be preferred depending on facility needs
- Travel positions may require 1–2 years of recent PTA experience
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge of physical therapy procedures and rehabilitation techniques
- Ability to motivate and encourage patients
- Excellent observation and documentation skills
- Physical stamina to assist patients with mobility and transfers
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to follow treatment plans accurately
